Choosing my AWIHL Team of the Decade

A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across the old AWIHL point-streak site at the perfectly normal hour of 3 am. Cut forward almost 3 hours and I had pulled down and combined the player stats from the entire decade into a mammoth CSV file for the sole purpose of answering one very important question:

“Who were the best AWIHL players of this decade?”

Before I began to even try an answer that  I sat down a couple of stipulations - skaters needed to have played over 36 games ( approximately 3 full seasons) while goalies needed to have played at least 21 games. Due to the lack of effective defensive stats, all skaters would merely be ranked on overall points production as well as the rate of that production this left a slight bias towards offensive defenders however there is little that I could do to mitigate that. Forwards were also selected as a general position rather than a break down of RW-C-LW due to the lack of positional data available.

To break it down simply for skaters I looked at their rank in regards to their Total Points across the decade and their rank across the decade in Points Per Game in a quest to find the players who have consistently produced at a high level across many seasons. I also took a similar method for Goaltenders looking at their Save Percentage, Goals Against Average, and Saves Above Average across the 10 year period.

All data used is sourced from the AWIHL point streak site (used 2009-15) and the AWIHL esportsdesk site (used 2015-current). Compiled data sheets will be included at the bottom of the article, a concerted effort has been put into tracking the name changes of players and ensuring their results have been correctly combined however minor errors may exist.

Of course with all list, it’s subjective. Had a ranked goal scoring as more important, or decided that penalty minutes of a sign of a good defender we would be dealing with an entirely separate situation. Maybe how I personally feel about a player becomes more important than their stats lines? So whats your team of the decade? Which 5 players from the AWIHL are you putting out on the ice given half a chance?
